NO BAG, NO BOARD - 7/14/10 EDITION

Besides being a day late last week (thanks America!), new comic book day was also known as X-Men Day. So in honor of this, I will spend most of my space here talking about Batman. Why? Motherfucking vampires, that's why. Way to jump on the bandwagon, Marvel. X-Men vs. Vampires is your follow-up to Second Coming, what I consider to be one of the greatest X-Crossovers in decades? WTX-F?

Anyway, BATMAN. Aaaaah. Grant Morrison is the cure for my summertime blues. His run on Batman has been something I keep going back to and re-reading, and every time I do I'm rewarded for my efforts. Damian Wayne. The Black Glove. The International Club of Batmen. R.I.P. Final Crisis. Batman and Robin. This is the best Batman has ever been. Frank Miller can suck Grant's big Scottish dick. It's so big he's writing BATMAN, which is about to tell the tale of what happened between R.I.P. and Final Crisis, BATMAN & ROBIN, which follows Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne in the title roles, and THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, where we are finding out what has happened to Bruce since being hit with Darkseid's Omega Sanction in Final Crisis.

Frazer Irving is the tits. His art feels like Halloween, which is perfect for a book where everybody's wearing masks or they’re horribly disfigured. First he did the pilgrim chapter of Return of Bruce Wayne and now Batman and Robin #13, the beginning of a new story arc. Has the Black Glove returned? Is Thomas Wayne still alive? Is Robin going to kill the Joker with a crowbar? And what’s up with the pig-headed dude? It’s an action-packed, mystery-filled read.

In non-batman-x-men/vampire-related-comics news, Matt Fraction's creator-owned series CASANOVA debuted at Icon last week. Fraction and twin artists Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon are re-releasing their evil/good parallel universe-jumping superspy book. This time it's in color and with a special back-up story that has me scratching my head and wondering if I missed something the first time I read volumes 1 & 2 of CASANOVA. There's lots of huffing, and robot and nurse fucking, so it should keep the twisted perverts happy. And since I’ve already read it all, you can look forward to plenty of Beatles references, gender-bending, helicarrier-jumping, drug-inhaling, side-switching, and popstar assassins! It's the smart, psychedelic spy story with everything, and I love it so much I’m buying it twice.

We’ll get back to the big X-Men crossover next time, but for now the X-teams need to be punished.

Vampires…

Seriously?

My favorite giant corporation is better than yours

Finally some DC love. The Batman books(with the exception of Judd Winick's run) have been pretty phenomenal lately with Morrison taking the lead on the franchise. I really got back into all the Superman books lately too(Supergirl, Adventure Comics, Action Comics, Superman, New Krypton etc) and even if you are a rabid DC hater, I would still recommend it. What Sterling Gates(fucking awesome name, right?) did for Supergirl is nothing short of a miracle. I understand a lot of you guys are mainly Marvel guys, but some of the shit coming out of DC/Vertigo right now are probably some of the best stuff I've read in a long time. Along with the Bats and Supes and to a slightly lesser extent Green Lantern books: R.E.B.E.L.S., The Unwritten, Madame Xanadu, Northlanders, and Sweet Tooth are must haves for me every month.

Also, Why don't you guys talk up Hercules/Prince of Power or Agents of Atlas very much? They are severely under-appreciated books coming out of Marvel right now and deserve way more attention than they get.

Hercules and Atlas

I guess, like you said, they don't get much attention. And such, I haven't read them.

As for DC, they're stuff just always seems to be such a mess that I rarely, if ever, feel like trying out something new from them. Blackest Night was pretty good, but it already feels incredibly dated, and it just ended, what, three months ago?

Atlas and Hercules

I would say go read them immediately. Atlas just started a new series but you should check out the last volumes as well(Agents of Atlas) and Hercules has been amazing since it took over Incredible Hulk after World War Hulk . Since Herc SPOILER "died" his sidekick has taken over and it's called Prince of Power. They aren't selling very well though so read 'em while you can

Supa-man

I really liked the Superman stuff that Geoff Johns was writing, especailly the stuff that crossed over with the Legion of Superheroes. I love Gary Frank's art.

I'm thinking of picking up Adventure Comics in trade. New Krypton didn't do much for me though. It should be interesting to see JMS on the book.

Maybe I'll check out Hercules and Agents of Atlas. Probably won't get to them before they're cancelled though. I only have so much money to spend on books.
