Unaccountably overlooked in its theatrical release, The Rapture is a startling philosophical drama that brings to light such weighty issues as religious zealousness, life after death and the search for faith. Rogers stars as a woman with a mind-numbing job as an L.A. telephone operator who seeks release from her existential emptiness in alcohol, and anonymous group sex. Her life changes dramatically, however, after she discovers God through a religious awakening. Her newly inspired faith is put to the test in a series of Job-like trials culminating in a vision to go to the desert (with her young daughter in tow) and await the Second Coming. A thought-provoking film that offers many angles to the religious issues and an ending which viewers to decide for themselves.
